King Sejong (Yeong-gyu Park) is dissatisfied with his eldest son’s excessive indulgence in alcohol and women, and demotes him from his position as crown prince, appointing his third son Lee Hyun (Ji-hun Ju) as the new crown prince. However, the bookish and frail Lee Hyun, uninterested in court politics and power, even attempts to escape his constrained life under his father’s repeated pressure. Deok-chil (Ji-hun Ju) is a strong slave who looks just like the crown prince. He has been infatuated with his master’s daughter, Soo-yeon (Ha-nui Lee), since childhood. Unexpectedly, the master gets caught up in a political conspiracy, and the whole family is falsely imprisoned for treason. Deok-chil tries to climb over the palace wall to save his beloved, and by a twist of fate, swaps identities with the crown prince, who is escaping from the palace. On one hand, Deok-chil nervously stands in for the crown prince in the palace, while on the other hand, the crown prince experiences hardships in the outside world, witnessing the suffering of the common people, which gradually gives him insights into being a ruler. At this moment, Prime Minister Shin Ik discovers the secret of the fake crown prince… The film is based on the well-known secret history of the virtuous and competent King Lee Hyun before and after he became crown prince.
