The social protests of the late 1960s and the worldwide student rebellions not only influenced pop music but also impacted the boys' choir at a Catholic boarding school in the far north of Japan. 15-year-old Mich is a new student at this school, struggling through a difficult adjustment period. He is very shy and often stutters, which makes him an easy target for the cruel teasing of his classmates. He manages to befriend Asu, a classmate with a beautiful soprano voice. Through kindness and friendship, Yasuo discovers Mich's decision to skip school, persuades him to stay, and join the school choir. Everyone is surprised when Mich begins to sing, his stutter disappears. He quickly gains confidence and falls in love with singing. Choir becomes very important to him. However, once school is over, it's the exact opposite. When he returns to Tokyo for vacation, he participates in protests with many other young students. Upon returning to school, he enthusiastically spreads revolutionary slogans, and his once crystal-clear voice undergoes a change. Yasuo's altered voice hinders his speaking, so he requests Mich to take his place in speaking engagements. To replace Asu in public speaking, Michio manages to completely overcome his stuttering problem. Their roles are reversed, and Michio begins to take care of Yasuo. Yasuo's life becomes increasingly difficult. The choir's innocent and peaceful rehearsals suddenly turn into a hotbed of social struggle representative of the era.
