In 1987, at the Malaysia-Thailand border, in a village at the foot of Gunung Jerai in Kedah, the villager Ah Chang is a devout believer in the local deity Datuk Gong, while his wife Ah Yan is skeptical. One day, Ah Chang drives away a snake from the altar and accidentally breaks the wall of his Siamese neighbor's house. Two weeks later, Ah Chang suddenly faints on the rice field ridge and spits out rusty nails. Three months later, with Ah Chang's illness not improving, Ah Yan, out of options, goes to the cave to worship the god of Gunung Jerai.
