The story takes place in 19th century England, where young Oscar (Ralph Fiennes) is a clergyman with grand ambitions. He embarks on a journey to the Australian outback, preparing to establish his career and bring more people under the grace of the Lord. Lucinda (Cate Blanchett), having grown up in a wealthy family, retains her beautiful dreams and pure spirit in her life of comfort. After inheriting her father's glass factory, she is determined to promote the attitude of women's liberation and self-reliance. On a ship adrift at sea, these two seemingly similar yet vastly different individuals meet. Competitive and strong-willed, they make a bet that requires Oscar to build a glass church and transport it to the inland mountains, with Lucinda's entire fortune at stake. This bold and reckless wager ultimately changes their fates forever.
