Young Claude (John Savage) from Oklahoma leaves home to enlist in the military and, by chance, meets four hippie friends: George (Treat Williams), Ralph, Wolf, and Jenny. They all get high and sleep on the streets together. Claude falls in love at first sight with Sheila (Beverly D'Angelo), a rich girl. In efforts to bring them together, George leads the group to crash Sheila's party, resulting in their arrest. After George gets bailed out, he scrambles to raise money, while the friends in prison create a stir by refusing to cut their long hair. After their release, they attend an anti-war rally where Claude and Sheila spark a romance, but the next day, Claude steps into the military to prepare for the Vietnam War. Sheila and George drive over a thousand miles to visit Claude, and on the eve of deployment, Claude and George's identities become reversed... This film won the Best Director and Best Score awards at the 1979 David di Donatello Awards.
