"Undercurrent" tells a surreal story of a married man in the closet by the coast of Peru, who faces a difficult choice between a conservative environment and the ghost of his beloved male partner. The original title "Contracorriente," literally translated as "Backflow," refers to the way the waves bend back, reverse, converge, and overlap against the shore amidst opposing forces, symbolizing the tumultuous forbidden love between the protagonist Miguel (played by Cristian Mercado) and Santiago (played by Manolo Cardona). Miguel is about to become a father but secretly loves the drowned ghost of painter Santiago. In order to be together, he hides Santiago's body, which brings unbearable weight to his life. Ultimately, Miguel's letting go of this relationship allows Santiago’s soul to find redemption. The film won the World Cinema Audience Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and represented Peru in the competition for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2011 Oscars.
