Young John (played by Paul Newman) is adopted by Old Mr. Rossell from a prisoner of war camp, but as he grows up, he chooses to return to live among the indigenous people, living a carefree life. After Old Rossell's death, he inherits a house, which has now become a hotel run by Jessie (played by Diane Cilento). The old man hoped he would integrate into white society and think in English, but he sells the house, forcing Jessie to go home. One day, they set out with a doctor couple and Frank (played by Cameron Mitchell), but encounter an attack by robbers; it turns out Frank is one of the bandits who are after the belongings the doctors are carrying. The robbers destroy their water bags and kidnap the doctor's wife as a hostage. The timid doctor is too afraid to rescue his wife, while she suffers in the heat. Rossell decides to risk his life to fight the robbers, and even in a dire situation, ultimately sacrifices himself to save others, dying together with the bandits.
