The film tells the story of the Sakurada family, a prominent local family, chronicling their history from Japan's defeat in 1946 to the film's completion in 1971, covering a span of 25 years. The protagonist, Manchuria, is the eldest grandson of the family. His father committed suicide after the defeat, and his mother, a nurse, has never been accepted by the family. The grandfather, Ichin, a former high-ranking government official before and during the war, is the family patriarch, while his uncle Terumichi is Ichin's illegitimate son. Additionally, a variety of characters reside within this large family. This aristocratic family, unbroken by defeat, shifts from right-wing to left-wing ideologies under the rule of a licentious patriarch, with a child born out of wedlock marrying a communist. Members of the family are constantly vying against and extorting each other based on their political affiliations, yet they also depend on one another due to their blood ties, embodying a microcosm of Japanese post-war history and society. Everyone living here, regardless of their political beliefs or class consciousness, faces dire consequences, often living in despair. The film features numerous deaths, whether from misfortune or intentional suicide, enveloped in a terrifying atmosphere of divine retribution. The film reflects the remorseful attitudes, social conditions, and political struggles of post-war Japan.
