Happy and kind old worker Luo Laoman couldn't sit still after retirement, so he became a volunteer traffic police officer. His partner passed away, leaving him with a son and a daughter. His son Daman is married and has a son named Xiaoman. Xiaoman is very pampered and is undoubtedly the "little emperor" of the family. Daman works as a manager at the "Lion Building" restaurant; he is honest and has inherited Laoman's easy-going and kind personality. His daughter Lu Xiulan is determined to go abroad for a "happy" life, disregarding her own dignity. She invites Laoman to watch her guest performance, which he is reluctant to do, but Xiaoman insists on going, and he reluctantly accompanies his grandson. On Xiaoman's sixth birthday, the Luo family throws him a birthday party. Just when everyone is in high spirits, Xiaoman runs to the parking lot to play marbles and unfortunately gets his leg injured by a car. At the hospital, they happen to encounter Dr. Zhong, who had previously fined Laoman 50 cents for a traffic violation, and he seizes this opportunity for revenge. To save his grandson, Laoman has to ask Daman to bring a gift, which leads to mockery. Unable to endure any longer, Laoman leaves with the gift in hand. Coincidentally, Dr. Zhong's mischievous son breaks his leg while diving and gets sent to the hospital; Dr. Zhong keeps avoiding responsibility, and when he finds out it's his own son, he screams for help! Troubles seem to always follow Laoman. Just when the family is happy about Xiaoman getting discharged, daughter Lu Xiulan returns in disgrace, pregnant out of wedlock while following a "Filipino Overseas Chinese" on a trip. Her boyfriend Zhong Xiaomao turns out to be a fraud and has been sent for labor education. Xiulan's dreams are completely shattered, and after paying a huge price, she starts to awaken to reality, calling Laoman "Dad" with deep affection for the first time. Seeing his daughter's miserable state, Laoman decides to confront Zhong Xiaomao's father, Zhong Hejian, for an accounting, only to find that Zhong Hejian is a very weak old man, with his wife having run off and him being completely submissive to Xiaomao, ultimately getting beaten by his son. Laoman feels oppressed, with nowhere to vent his anger. The story seems to conclude with Laoman still being happy, but he longs to cry, to cry freely. Instead, he ends up laughing, shedding tears—those heart-wrenching tears.
