In May 1935, during the Long March, the Red Army crossed the Jinsha River and entered the Liangshan area of Sichuan. This region is home to a concentration of ethnic minorities. In order to eliminate the Red Army, Chiang Kai-shek mobilized hundreds of thousands of troops in an attempt to encircle them south of the Dadu River. To ensure smooth progress, the Central Committee of the Communist Party dispatched Liu Bocheng and Nie Rongzhen to lead the Red Army's advance team to clear the way for the main force. Along the way, the advance team fought valiantly while promoting the Party's ethnic policies. In the Liangshan area, due to the long-term brutal oppression by the reactionary forces of the Kuomintang against the Yi people, there was deep ethnic estrangement. After the Red Army entered the Yi area, the Yi people were deceived and, not knowing the truth, implemented a policy of obstruction against the Red Army. The Red Army strictly adhered to the Party's ethnic policy and, despite facing various difficulties and provocations, refused to fire upon their suffering Yi compatriots. All of this was witnessed by the Yi people, and their leader, Xiao Yedan, was deeply moved. They declared a great cause and vowed to unite the military and the people to resist the reactionary Kuomintang. At that time, Red Army Chief of Staff Liu Bocheng and Xiao Yedan swore an oath of blood at Yi Sea, and the advance team successfully completed their mission. The Yi people sent the Red Army off on a new journey.
