Around 1948, in a typical Southern town in China, filled with broken walls and crumbling roofs, young woman Zhou Yuwen (played by Wei Wei) lives a monotonous life with her sick husband Dai Liyan (played by Shi Yu). The war has not only stripped Liyan of his family fortune but also robbed him of his belief in life. Yuwen spends her days buying groceries in the morning, fetching medicine for Liyan, and after wandering the city walls for a while, she returns home dejectedly, tossing the medicine to him while exchanging only a few words, leaving her with half the day to silently embroider in her sister Dai Xiu's (played by Zhang Hongmei) room—this, she believes, is the only remaining place of life in the small town aside from the wall she wanders in the morning. The arrival of Zhang Zhichen (played by Li Wei) breaks the lethargy of it all. He is an old friend of Liyan, but also a former lover of Yuwen. In contrast to Liyan's somberness, Zhichen is young, healthy, and full of vitality, which secretly attracts the peculiar Dai Xiu. However, Zhichen has always kept Yuwen in his heart, and he undoubtedly embodies Yuwen's inner desires and yearnings. As a psychological game of hesitation and resistance between Zhichen and Yuwen unfolds, Liyan and Dai Xiu begin to sense the underlying dynamics.
