In 1998, Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, suffers relentless destruction by the Taliban regime. Under a government that discriminates against women, two couples, who originally had no intersection, find their lives changed by an unexpected event. Although she is an artist and wears a burqa, she yearns to hold hands and embrace her beloved husband freely on the street. As the head of a Taliban women's prison, he grows increasingly distant from his wife, who is terminally ill, and suddenly realizes that the freedom outside the burqa is just an illusion. If he could love again, he would pursue it like a moth drawn to a flame. This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Algerian writer Yasmina Khadra, and uses simple watercolor textures to highlight the heavy human rights issues.
