Before and after the Xinhai Revolution, the fate of Xianglin Sao (played by Bai Yang), who lived in a mountain village in eastern Zhejiang, was tragic. Her husband Xianglin died young, and after his death, the coffin debts grew larger and larger, making life difficult for the family. In desperation, her mother-in-law forced her second son A'gen to marry to repay debts, and under the instigation of matchmaker Wei Laoduo (played by Guan Zongxiang), she secretly sold her daughter-in-law to He Laoliu (played by Wei Heling). A'gen informed his sister-in-law of this matter, and the heartbroken Xianglin Sao fled overnight, finding work in the home of Lu Si Laoye in Luzhen through introductions. Not long after, her mother-in-law came to take her back. The woman forced to return almost caused a tragedy; fortunately, He Laoliu was kind and treated her well. The birth of her son A'mao allowed Xianglin Sao to experience a slight glimpse of the rare happiness in life. However, the good times did not last long, as her husband and son died one after another, completely pushing Xianglin Sao's life to the bottom... This film is adapted from the famous novel of the same name by Chinese literary figure Lu Xun.
