The film is adapted from the Cantonese opera classic "Unfinished Love and Revenge at Fengge" by Mai Bingrong and Phoenix Girl. Princess Yan (played by Charlene Choi) is determined to marry into a vassal state as a royal consort. During her long journey to her wedding, she becomes a feuding pair with General Cheng (played by Raymond Lam) who is tasked with escorting her, only for the two to gradually fall in love. Ignoring the world's disapproval of their feelings, they exchange family heirlooms, a pearl and a jade pendant, as tokens of their love, only to encounter bandits. In the chaos, Yan falls off a cliff, and Cheng is captured by the bandits. The star-crossed lovers are separated, each facing their own adventures. Cheng is brought back to the bandit's lair by their female leader, Zhu San Niang (played by Joey Yung), while Yan survives but loses her memory, saved by a storyteller named Ling Gan Kai (played by Wong Cho-Lam). General Cheng sets out from the bandit's den to find the princess, closely followed by the lovesick Zhu San Niang; meanwhile, the amnesiac Princess Yan is left to live a mundane life as an unsuccessful scholar who tells stories. One day, when they all cross paths, what story will unfold...
