Directed by Li Hanxiang, "Buddha Jumps Over the Wall" consists of four segments. The first story describes a mother and son who escape death by offering a bowl of soy milk to Ji Gong; the second tells of Ji Gong helping a vegetable seller escape from the troubles of loan sharks; the third depicts Ji Gong transforming cherries into a luminous pearl to teach a lesson to a big thief; and the final segment portrays Ji Gong using clever tricks to outsmart the corrupt official and his son. Through Ji Gong’s good deeds, Li Hanxiang critiques the various evils of the powerful and tyrannical, giving voice to the grievances of the common people.
