The Southern Sword, Ding Menghao (Lu Ping), is known as the world's greatest sword. Many swordsmen in the martial world have fallen under his blade, but one day, Ding unexpectedly loses to a passing strange monk's smoking rod. To fulfill his promise, he submits to the strange monk's rigorous training for three years. During this time, Ding suffers immensely and, in front of a giant rock at the entrance of the sculptor's mountain, he learns to become a stonemason, effectively honing his sharpness under the strange monk's guidance, who secretly teaches him as well. Once the three years are over, the strange monk leaves him with parting words, saying that if he wishes to live, he must first learn to die.
