The story begins with scholar Liu Zigu falling in love at first sight with A Xiu, the fan-selling girl at a grocery store, just like in the original "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio." Liu Zigu, who harbors a secret crush on A Xiu, connects with her through the painting on the fan, which catches the eye of a fox spirit that has transformed into human form to explore the mortal world. Unlike the original tale, this fox spirit is a male! As he experiences human emotions for the first time, he finds the romantic entanglements of men and women amusing and wishes to partake in them himself.
