Eleanor Lance (Lili Taylor) is a woman on the brink of forty whose life is in disarray. She sacrifices her own happiness to care for her ailing mother for over a decade. After her mother's death, her sister Jane (Virginia Madsen) plots to seize her property. In desperation, Eleanor sees a volunteer recruitment ad for a sleep study in the newspaper and, attracted by the compensation offered, decides to apply. Also responding to the ad are Theo D'Onofrio (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Luke Sanderson (Owen Wilson). Under the guidance of Professor Marlow (Liam Neeson), they arrive at a manor that has been around for over a century. The manor is not only historic but has also been the site of numerous mysterious deaths.
