A flood caused Mio to be separated from her childhood friend, Noe. Having lost both parents, Mio became homeless until the owner of a famous Osaka restaurant, Tenman Ichijoan, named Aho took her in and discovered her exceptional cooking talent. Thus, at the age of 12, Mio began to learn culinary arts at Tenman Ichijoan. However, a fire soon destroyed the restaurant. Mio and the owner moved to Edo, where they helped at a restaurant called Tsuruy. Initially, Mio's cooking didn't appeal to customers and even angered some. Although the owner comforted her, the differences in taste between Osaka and Edo made her lose confidence in her cooking skills. After several setbacks and with guidance from a ronin named Komatsubara and Doctor Nagata, Mio realized the differences in cuisine between Osaka and Edo and made changes. Her improved dishes were well received but were quickly imitated by other restaurants, prompting Mio to ponder on flavors that truly belong to her.
