The relationship between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law has always been tricky, and Charlie (played by Jennifer Lopez) faces the same issue. Just as she is about to tie the knot with her boyfriend Kevin (played by Michael Vartan), she encounters a serious problem: Kevin's mother, Mrs. Fields (played by Jane Fonda), has reservations about this future daughter-in-law. Mrs. Fields once had a respectable career, but now she channels all her love and attention to her son and cannot accept Charlie's "intrusion." Mrs. Fields, along with her assistant, goes to great lengths to drive away this unwelcome guest, and since Charlie has finally found her ideal partner, she certainly won't give in easily. The two parties start to engage in a shadowy competition, exchanging tactics back and forth.
