In the 1950s, Natasha operates a canteen at a secret research institute in the Soviet Union, where staff, scientists, and foreign visitors gather. Natasha's world is small; she works in the canteen during the day and drinks with her young colleague Olya at night, sharing her longing for romance and dreams of the future. One night at a party, Natasha becomes intimate with the visiting French scientist Luc Bige. The next day, her life takes a dramatic turn when General Vladimir Archipo from the KGB interrogates her.
