August "Auggie" Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) is a 10-year-old boy who is just like any other child his age, except for the fact that he wears a large space helmet. Beneath the helmet is Auggie's scarred face, a result of various surgeries. The helmet not only perfectly conceals Auggie's fragile and insecure inner self but also successfully prevents his appearance from frightening other children. Auggie has never been to school; all of his knowledge comes from his mother, Isabel (Julia Roberts), who has been homeschooling him. However, Isabel gradually realizes that home schooling cannot fulfill Auggie's growth needs. Beyond acquiring knowledge, Auggie must learn how to interact with people outside of his family. With concerns weighing heavily on her, Isabel enrolls Auggie in a public school, where he faces challenges he must overcome in his life.
