In early autumn 1989 in Berlin, William Baubellet's family is celebrating his 90th birthday. William was once a resistance fighter, and having traveled abroad, he firmly believes in Stalinism. Despite the brewing storm outside, his wife Charlotte is still managing the birthday party, maintaining the tranquility at home. However, William's grandson Sasha has gone missing at this critical moment—no one could have anticipated that Sasha had fled to West Berlin a few days earlier. The film unfolds from the perspective of Sasha's father, historian Kurt, starting with the disintegration of a family, showcasing the "twilight of doom" as the rule of East Germany is about to end in the late 1980s.
