In October 1942, Shelah (played by Paolo Briguglia), a university student studying philosophy and literature, arrives as a volunteer to the North African Italian army in Egypt to prove his courage. The commander of the stationed troops, Lieutenant Fiore, becomes despondent and irritable due to the long wait without a change of guard. Shelah is assigned to Sergeant Rizzo's (played by Pierfrancesco Favino) squad, where his task, like that of his comrades, is to hold the Italian army's defensive line in the vast desert amidst the arbitrary shelling from the British forces. This is a war, but more so a competition for survival. The Italian troops lack supplies, and more terrifying than the gunfire are disease and thirst. The Italian soldiers live daily in fear of British attacks. During a reconnaissance mission, Shelah and Rizzo discover Italian soldiers killed by the British, and the attack from the British forces seems even more imminent...
