Sanford (played by John Cusack) is a psychiatrist who, while healing the ailments of others, finds his own family deeply scarred. His son Benjie (played by Evan Bird) has been sent to rehab for drug abuse at a young age, and his daughter Agatha (played by Mia Wasikowska) is even worse off, having been committed to a psychiatric hospital for arson. Not only is Sanford's family life in turmoil, but his career has also hit a dead end. Havana (played by Julianne Moore) is one of his patients and an actress living in the shadow of her famous mother, haunted even in her dreams by her mother's specter. Agatha has been released from the hospital, and Benjie has returned home, but their return brings Sanford even greater troubles and a more chaotic life.
