In the future, New York, young billionaire Eric Packer (played by Robert Pattinson) sits in a luxury limousine, protected by a bodyguard, heading to a barbershop he has known since childhood. Along the way, he encounters a variety of people and bizarre events: his young wife Alice (played by Sarah Gadon) is emotionally distant, only crossing paths with him intermittently; a middle-aged woman (played by Juliette Binoche) comes to have sex with him and then informs him about art pieces; the continuous appreciation of the yuan leads him to witness a loss of wealth; outside the car window, Manhattan is descending into chaos, and someone is tracking him, seemingly wanting to kill him. Attacks escalate from a cake to bullets, and everything in the air is filled with panic and an apocalyptic feel. As he arrives at the barbershop, Packer is left wondering how this chaotic day will come to an end…
