Bobby Boucher (Adam Sandler), the waterboy for a college football team, has social anxiety and is often bullied by his teammates. Coach Red believes he is hindering the team's training and dismisses him. Unemployed, Bobby cannot leave the waterboy job he has held for 18 years and joins a financially struggling university team, the Mud Dogs, as a volunteer. Coach Klein discovers that Bobby possesses extraordinary tackling skills when he's angry and decides to recruit him. Bobby's mother (Kathy Bates), worried about her son, opposes any thoughts of him leaving her side, especially with the arrival of his childhood friend, troubled girl Vicky (Fairuza Balk), which adds to her anxiety. Keeping his team membership a secret from his mother, Bobby helps the team achieve victory after victory and ultimately finds love and true recognition from others.
