The story takes place in a certain location in Shanxi. City boy Yang Jin (played by Li Shuchen) has graduated from elementary school. He is exceptionally bright and can clearly recite all the place names in the province. Feeling grown-up, he writes to his parents to tell them he is going to his grandmother's house. The truth is, he has run away to the mountains to visit his good friend Wang Xiaobo (played by Wang Chen). Wang Xiaobo has mediocre grades and is usually mischievous; he can both catch fish in the Yellow River and crabs in the mountains, making him the "little troublemaker" among his peers. Yang Jin's grandmother has a serious preference for boys over girls; she loves her grandson more than her granddaughter.
