Mu Chunhong is a psychotherapist at Beihe City Prison, engaged in psychological counseling for inmates, responsible for their psychological guidance and treatment of mental issues. Mu Chunhong divorced ten years ago and later remarried Chen Kang, a worker at a coke plant, bringing her daughter Menmen along. Chen Kang adores his stepdaughter, and their marriage is harmonious. One day, in order to help retired workers at the plant fight for social security, Chen Kang has a heated argument with the management and unexpectedly collapses, ending up in the hospital. While in a coma, he calls out a name—"Xiaowen." This intrigues Mu Chunhong, as it turns out Chen Kang has a son named Chen Bowen, a fact he had kept hidden. After Chen Kang fell ill, Mu Chunhong finally learns this truth... It turns out that Chen Kang goes fishing almost every day, though Mu Chunhong doesn’t particularly like fish and can't stand the fishy smell; she still supports his fishing endeavors. Unbeknownst to her, Chen Kang only waits outside the prison daily for Xiaowen to finish his exercises, hoping to hear his voice. However, with so many people around, he can’t even figure out who Xiaowen is! Soon, Chen Kang passes away, and Mu Chunhong meets Chen Bowen, who is serving time in prison for a mistake he made seven years prior. Through her understanding of Chen Bowen, Mu Chunhong gains a new perspective on Chen Kang and resolves to accept and help change Chen Bowen. Chen Kang's greatest wish before his death was to see his son’s life back on track. Young Chen Bowen has long struggled with the loss of his mother, who died in an accident while Chen Kang was working a night shift. His mother, Xiufang, had been delivering food to him when a drunken truck driver hit her. She assured everyone she was fine and sent them away, but after going home, she never woke up. Because of this sudden loss and his father's role in it, Chen Bowen has never been able to forgive Chen Kang, and later, his criminal behavior leads to deeper emotional scars. Mu Chunhong sees all this and realizes that even in his final moments, Chen Kang's thoughts were still deeply tied to his son, indicating that his relationship had profound significance. As a female counselor, how can she save the son left behind by her ex-husband? Through her ongoing efforts to understand Chen Bowen, Mu Chunhong uses her professional expertise to help him overcome his shadows while also playing a maternal role in his life. Although many of her actions may not yield immediate effects, their impact is pervasive and transformative. Perhaps without realizing it, the kind, simple, independent, and self-respecting Mu Chunhong has already done everything a mother would do... Mu Chunhong teaches Chen Bowen to try to give up his stubborn positions and perspectives, to consider things from others' viewpoints. Different angles can lead to different understandings, and stubbornness often deepens problems rather than resolving them. Because of Mu Chunhong’s involvement, Chen Bowen transitions from resistance to acceptance, undergoing a form of spiritual cleansing he has never experienced before. Deep down, he still harbors hope for the future; he just needs a kind "shepherd" to guide him back onto the right path. A year later, as Chen Bowen is released from prison, he is met at the gate by Mu Chunhong, along with Chen Lu and Menmen. Looking at Mu Chunhong, he smiles for the first time in ages, clearly ready to start a new life. Mu Chunhong shouts, "Kids! We’re going home!" Chen Bowen begins his new life.
