Ailini (Ingrid Bergman) is an American socialite living in Rome, living a life of luxury and ignorance, completely detached from the world outside. She is unaware and uninterested in what is happening beyond her sheltered existence, focusing all her energy on her household. What Ailini doesn't expect is that her son Mike (Sandro Franchina) chooses to commit suicide. Mike's death hits Ailini like a bucket of cold water, awakening her to reality. After the initial pain of losing her son subsides, Ailini decides to engage in charitable work, personally reaching out to the poor and providing them with tangible help. These actions bring Ailini spiritual solace, and she even decides to move out of her home to live with some impoverished prostitutes. Ailini's actions soon anger her husband.
