During the rampant militarism, a fishing boat named "Bokou Maru" is jolting through the tumultuous waves of the Kamchatka Peninsula, carrying dozens of crab workers. This boat is owned by a food company that specializes in crab meat canned products, and it conducts frenzied fishing and production in the name of the Empire. The crab workers come from various backgrounds, but all have one thing in common: they are from impoverished families. For a meager wage, they endure high-intensity labor every day while constantly facing punishment and abuse from the devilish foreman, Asakawa (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima). The crab workers find themselves unable to survive, yet unable to die, their despair and hopelessness spreading wildly within the "Bokou Maru." By chance, crab worker Shinjou (played by Ryuhei Matsuda) and Shioda (played by Hirofumi Arai) board a Russian ship, where they are inspired by the atmosphere of freedom and joy on board. Upon returning to the "Bokou Maru," Shinjou encourages everyone to rise up against the exploitation of the capitalists... This film is adapted from the novella of the same name by Japanese Communist writer Takiji Kobayashi.
