In September 1944, Britain aimed to end World War II before Christmas. Thus, the Supreme Commander issued an unprecedented special mission—this was the largest airborne assault in the history of World War II. Thirty-five thousand Allied soldiers were to be air-dropped behind enemy lines in the Netherlands occupied by Germany. In this airborne operation, a small group of soldiers codenamed "Matchbox" had their own mission.
