In a certain year of the Republic of China, during the silkworm flower season, the small town of Shuanghe by the Jiangnan Canal welcomed the annual Silkworm Flower Festival. This festival was generously sponsored by Lu Si, who ran the Tianchan Palace in Shanghai, with the aim of revitalizing Southern Peking Opera and discovering new martial artists. Every year, the Silkworm Flower Festival attracted various opera troupes, providing the local fans of Shuanghe Town with a thrilling experience of authentic martial arts performances, while also making Lu Si famous along the banks of the canal.
However, during last year's Silkworm Flower Festival, the star performer of the Qi family troupe, Yu Die, suspiciously drowned in the canal that flows through Shuanghe Town. Jingpai martial artist Ju Shaosheng had previously performed alongside Yu Die in Shanghai, and her death prompted him to dive into the murky waters of Shuanghe Town. Ju Shaosheng arrived under the guise of treating a back injury just as the Qi family and Hua family troupes, who participated in the festival every year, docked at the Shuanghe wharf.
Without Yu Die, the Qi family troupe gradually fell into decline, and the troupe leader, Boss Qi, had no choice but to approach Hua Erlang, the leader of the Hua family troupe, asking him to allow them some roles. The late Yu Die was a senior fellow apprentice of Hua Erlang. Although Hua Erlang accepted the money sent by Boss Qi, he refused to return the "sword" that had already been drawn. With Hua Erlang unwilling to lend a high platform, Boss Qi had to turn to Ju Shaosheng, hoping that the successor of the Northern school of martial artists could take Li Yunlai as his disciple.
Ju Shaosheng had never taken a disciple before, but seeing the heroic Li Yunlai, he decided to help the Qi family troupe. Li Yunlai's grandfather was once the lover of Madame Zhang, a renowned figure in Shuanghe Town, when she was young. Because of this relationship, the Qi family troupe received special favor from Madame Zhang, which also allowed her granddaughter-in-law, Gu Yanqiu, to offer them a place to stay, bringing lively sounds of drums to an otherwise quiet residence.
With the favor of Madame Zhang and Gu Yanqiu, and the support of Ju Shaosheng, the martial artist from the Jing school, Li Yunlai performed on stage. Although he lacked the spirit and skills to rival Hua Erlang, he still won applause with a performance of "The Monkey King Causes Havoc in Heaven." However, as Lu Si plotted to kill, the Qi family's leader "accidentally" met his demise. With the deaths of Yu Die and the leader of the Qi family troupe at two consecutive Silkworm Flower Festivals, Ju Shaosheng decided to investigate the facts and bring Lu Si to justice.
Ju Shaosheng represented the Qi family troupe on stage to compete against Hua Erlang from the Hua family troupe. Hua Erlang played for real, ready to take Lu Si's life to avenge his senior brother Yu Die. Lu Si's dark schemes harmed others, leading to Hua Erlang's untimely death, and Ju Shaosheng left Shuanghe with ironclad evidence of Lu Si's murderous plot disguised as performance. After recovering from his injuries, Ju Shaosheng emerged as a master of the pear garden. After the liberation, theatrical tyrant Lu Si faced suppression from the people's government, while the waterway opera troupes of Hangjiahu that began in the Qing dynasty left behind a legacy of Southern martial artist art that continues to this day.
