At the end of 1982, naive teenager Chen Xiaolu saw a television for the first time at his friend Duoduo's house. Duoduo's arrogant attitude in casually changing channels hurt the self-esteem of the proud Xiaolu. After returning home in low spirits, Xiaolu encountered his grandfather, the blind Old Jiu, at the supply and marketing cooperative, overhearing a conflict involving Old Jiu. When he went to inquire, Xiaolu discovered that the blind Old Jiu had a long-hidden secret with the village party secretary, Chen Quanyou, concealed inside a suona (a traditional Chinese horn). In the panic, his friends broke the tape recorder and scattered. Fearing to go home after breaking the tape recorder, Xiaolu sought out Old Jiu and recounted what happened. During the repair, Xiaolu learned that the tape recorder wasn't broken; the tape had just been erased. Suddenly inspired, he suggested that Old Jiu play the national anthem on the suona and record it. Old Jiu, who had vowed never to touch the suona, took Xiaolu to seek help from the troupe leader, Dalinzi. While chatting with Dalinzi, Xiaolu learned that Chen Quanyou, Old Jiu’s disciple, had been troubled for many years over the matter concerning Old Jiu's son and had been secretly helping him. After recording, Xiaolu reconciled with Duoduo, and Old Jiu also resolved his past grievances with his disciple, Chen Quanyou. School started, and a live performance of the suona solo of "March of the Volunteers" sounded at the flag-raising ceremony in the mountain village elementary school.
