Ronin student Shinji Takamura has a fight with his brother over his future one day, and after exchanging heated words, he runs away from home. Shortly after, he meets model Keiko Shirakawa, who has just finished a commercial shoot. Knowing that Keiko is returning to Tokyo, Shinji decides to rely on an acquaintance, Ken Yamamoto, who moved to Tokyo a few years ago, and heads to the city in her car. After parting ways with Keiko in Tokyo, Shinji visits Ken's apartment in Shinjuku and unexpectedly reunites with Ken and his sister Miki, who is visiting. Staying at Ken's place, Shinji starts a street vending job, and after a few days, he writes a letter to his family to report his situation and reassure them. Later, when Shinji tells Ken that he has met the famous model Keiko, Ken suggests he look for her to get a proper full-time job. Although Shinji is initially turned away by the agency staff, he takes a few days to find Keiko's whereabouts and, after being introduced to Ken's work, starts working at a snack bar himself. One day, after closing, the master of the bar enjoys Shinji's singing and decides to have him perform in front of customers starting the next day. A few days later, when Keiko visits the bar, she asks Shinji to create a song, prompting him to start composing in his spare time. Meanwhile, when the landlord pressures Shinji for rent, he finds out that half of the rent money he had given to Ken is missing and contacts Ken's company. However, he learns that Ken has quit his job days earlier. Upon meeting Miki, she reveals that Ken was sick and used the rent money for his medical expenses. Needing a significant amount for Ken's treatment, Shinji is turned down for an advance by the master. When he explains the situation to Keiko, she introduces him to a promoter. The promoter tells Shinji that he will pay if he likes the song he composed. Shinji performs with heartfelt emotion in front of the two of them and ends up selling the song. With the money, Shinji returns to the apartment, and Ken expresses his desire to see the sea of his hometown. A few days later, the three of them take the train back home. Upon leaving the station, the group reaches a hill and then walks to an elevated area, where Miki is the first to see the sea and exclaims, "Look, it's the sea!" After reuniting with his family at home for the first time in a while, Shinji shares his decision to live in Tokyo and sets off for the city again
