A person, a dog, experiencing life as the seasons change throughout the year. A writer named A-Mian, who has lived alone for many years in the mountains of Karuizawa, obtains his meals from nature for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with fruits, mushrooms, wild herbs, and bamboo shoots from the mountains gracing his table. A-Mian's editor and girlfriend, Sachiko, sometimes visits him from Tokyo; cooking seasonal ingredients together and savoring them with a loved one makes the food most delicious. From the first day of spring to the winter solstice, he gratefully accepts the foods nurtured by nature, embracing the moment of cherishing life. Through his mountainside existence, A-Mian slowly learns the essence of life. Whether in cooking, cleaning, or writing, A-Mian is accustomed to carefully completing everything he needs to do each day. However, he still cannot decide how to handle the ashes of his wife, who passed away 13 years ago... This film is adapted from the culinary essay "Days of Eating Soil" by writer Mitsukami Mame. Starring the talented Kenji Sawada and Takako Matsu, the film features cuisine prepared by the culinary master Yoshiharu Doi, portraying the taste of life through seasonal dishes. Japan's tea ceremony and flower arrangement incorporate the intangible Zen into tangible objects, while this work integrates Zen into everyday cooking. Cooking, as well as doing other things like cleaning, laundry, brewing, and writing, all require complete devotion and living in the moment; that is Zen.
