London dentist Bertram Pincus (played by Ricky Gervais) practices in New York and struggles with social interactions, being selfish and cynical. After a near-death experience during a colon surgery where he is clinically dead for 7 minutes, he awakens with the ability to communicate with ghosts. Plagued by many ghosts, Bertram encounters the spirit of Frank (played by Greg Kinnear), a former public relations expert, who requests his help to prevent Frank's widow, archaeological expert Gwen (played by Téa Leoni), from remarrying her human rights lawyer boyfriend Richard (played by Billy Campbell). In interacting with Gwen, Bertram finds himself unexpectedly falling in love; although Gwen and Richard's marriage is successfully canceled, Frank's wish for closure remains unfulfilled. Furthermore, the requests from various ghosts for Bertram to help fulfill their last wishes grow increasingly overwhelming, leaving the typically self-centered Bertram at a loss… The film won the Ohio Central Film Critics Association award for Best Underrated Film and the Satellite Award for Best Actor (Ricky Gervais).
