Mike (played by Paul Giamatti) is a small-town lawyer who inadvertently becomes the guardian of Leo (played by Burt Young), an elderly man with dementia, while helping him with a guardianship lawsuit. Caring for Leo alone is not enough; unexpectedly, Leo's grandson Kyle (played by Alex Shaffer) shows up after having a falling out with his drug-addicted mother, seeking refuge with his grandfather. Mike's family takes him in and arranges for him to attend a nearby high school. Mike also serves as the coach of the school's wrestling team and soon discovers that Kyle is a talented wrestler. The situation seems "win-win," as Leo and Kyle receive care, Mike gains a strong asset for his team, and they receive a monthly guardianship income of $1,500 to help with household expenses. However, this balance is disrupted by the arrival of Kyle's mother, Cindy (played by Melanie Lynskey), who wants to reclaim guardianship of Leo. With her back in the picture, Kyle has no further reason to stay with Mike’s family, but only Kyle understands that his mother cares nothing for him and his grandfather; her only interest is in grandpa's money…
