Manuela (played by Cecilia Roth) became a single mother after her husband left her before their son was born. She moved to Madrid with her son Esteban, who knows nothing about his father. Manuela has to tell her son that his father has passed away. However, Esteban ultimately does not believe her. He secretly writes in his diary about missing his father. A car accident strikes suddenly, and Esteban's life is taken by an oncoming vehicle. In her profound grief, Manuela decides to find her child's father, Lola, to fulfill her son's wish. However, she discovers that Lola has transformed into a woman, become a prostitute, and contracted AIDS. Even more unfortunately, Sister Rosa (played by Penélope Cruz) becomes pregnant with Lola's child. Manuela stays by Rosa's side to take care of her, and the baby born from Rosa is named Esteban after her son, bringing hope to their suffering days—the newborn miraculously escapes the fate of AIDS.
