The air in Delhi is murky and toxic, often causing the kestrels to fall from the sky and crash into buildings, injuring themselves. Nadeem and Saud are a pair of Muslim brothers who treat injured kestrels in a cramped basement. When they first discovered an injured kestrel, they took it to a bird hospital, but the hospital refused to treat "non-vegetarian" birds. With some anatomical knowledge from their bodybuilding training, they began treating the kestrels and have since healed over 20,000 of them. India has recently leaned heavily towards religious majoritarianism. Last year, the government introduced a citizenship law that infringed upon the rights of 182 million Muslims. Protests swept the nation. The brothers cared for the kestrels but were also torn about joining the protests. After two months of street protests, things suddenly turned bloody. Rioters killed over 50 people in Delhi, most of whom were Muslims. The brothers patrolled their neighborhood at night, fearful that rioters would come to cause trouble. This story of humanity and kestrels unveils the lesser-known aspects of life in one of the most dangerous cities in the world.
