Sebastian (played by Stéphane Rousseau), who is like a stranger to his father, suddenly receives a call from his mother Louise. His father, the notoriously charming history professor Rémi, is now lying in a hospital bed and is nearing death. After some hesitation, Sebastian rushes back to Montreal to spend his father's last days with him. Years of estrangement and differences in their lifestyles lead to turmoil between the father and son from the very beginning, but Sebastian still does everything he can to ensure his father passes peacefully. He moves his father to a comfortable hospital room, calls together his father's old friends, and even buys heroin for pain relief. Throughout their time together, the relationship between the two undergoes subtle changes. The film has been praised as a "farewell ceremony of life," sweeping various film awards with its simple yet poignant imagery and delicate emotions. In 2003, it won Best Screenplay and Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for the Palme d'Or; in 2004, it received the César Award for Best Director, Best Film, and Best Screenplay; and in 2004, it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.
