The film is adapted from the novella of the same name by Eileen Chang. Ge Weilon (Ma Sichun) is a naive and kind-hearted female student who, to escape the war, flees with her family to Hong Kong. Later, forced by circumstances, Ge Weilon's family decides to return to their hometown, and the determined Ge Weilon stays alone in the foreign land, relying on her aunt Mrs. Liang (Yu Feihong), who severed ties with the family long ago. Although there are many rumors about Mrs. Liang, Ge Weilon believes she will not be influenced by this mysterious woman.
