In 2012, humanity is infected by an unknown virus, and New York becomes a deserted city. Robert Neville (played by Will Smith) is a scientist serving in the military and a survivor who is immune to the virus. During the day, he searches for food on the streets with his dog Sam, looking for other survivors through the radio, and researching a cure for the virus in his lab; at night, he can only hide in his house, as those infected who did not die have become "dark seekers" who can only roam at night, having lost their sanity and will attack everyone. One day, Sam also becomes infected and dies, plunging Robert Neville into unprecedented loneliness. When he is about to die with the "dark seekers," another survivor, Anna (played by Alice Braga), saves him. Anna believes there are other survivors in a quarantine area on the mountain, but the stubborn Robert Neville insists on staying in New York.
