This film is a grand masterpiece filled with philosophical themes that Kubrick spent four years creating. A large black monolith stands before prehistoric humans who have just begun to recognize tools, marking a milestone in evolution. The same black monolith appears in various places in the universe, standing on the moon, floating in space, carrying some mysterious significance. Now it is the year 2001, and in order to uncover the origins of the monolith, humanity embarks on a Jupiter landing mission. On the spacecraft are three astronauts in hibernation: Captain David (played by Keir Dullea), Pilot Frank (played by Gary Lockwood), and a highly intelligent computer named "HAL9000." HAL malfunctions during the space mission, causing Frank and the three hibernating crew members to die in succession, leaving Bowman to battle against this computer. David, who returns from the brink of death, in anger shuts down the mainframe system, and HAL is rendered completely inoperative. Now, in the vastness of space, only David remains, heading toward Jupiter. Passing through a wondrous and spectacular star gate, David seems to enter a peculiar time and space, where the endless cycle of life and death for humanity exists alongside the ultimate knowledge of the universe…
