Merlin (played by Stellan Skarsgård) was once a deeply faithful priest; however, after being shaped by the trials of World War II, his spiritual world has undergone a tremendous change. After the war, Merlin remains trapped in nightmarish memories that he cannot escape from, and this dangerous signal prompts him to embark on a journey to rediscover the meaning of life and faith. Merlin arrives in Cairo, where he meets a renowned collector. At the collector's suggestion, Merlin joins an archaeological dig team to investigate a recently uncovered Christian church in Kenya. Legends say that the church hides priceless artifacts, and the collector hopes Merlin can be the first to find them. However, what everyone doesn't know is that a real demon is hidden among the ruins, and the arrival of the archaeological team is about to awaken it.
