The town of Horomui, once prosperous as a coal mining area, has sadly seen a decline in population. The Horomui branch line has also decided to cease operations and will be abandoned soon. Sato Otsumatsu (played by Ken Takakura) is the stationmaster of Horomui Station on the local branch line in Hokkaido. Every day, Otsumatsu has to handle ticketing alone, use a small flag to direct trains entering and leaving the station, clean the station interior, and take care of other miscellaneous tasks. Old colleague Sugiura Senji visits Horomui Station, hoping to persuade Otsumatsu to join him in working at a resort after retirement, but Otsumatsu firmly declines, believing he must accompany the railroad with his life. Due to his dedication to his job, his daughter Yukiko, who passed away 17 years ago, and his wife Shizue (played by Shinobu Otake), who died two years ago, can only face death alone, leaving Otsumatsu to endure the pain in silence.
