Danny (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) was once a passionate revolutionary youth, arrested for joining the Irish Republican Army, and spent fourteen years in a harsh prison environment. After enduring a long period of unfreedom, Danny, back in society, decides to turn over a new leaf and live as a modest, ordinary person. After his release, Danny returns to his old profession as a boxing coach, training a group of young people who share his love for the sport. An unexpected reunion with his former lover Maggie (played by Emily Watson) occurs; at this point, Maggie is raising her fourteen-year-old son Lynn alone, struggling to make ends meet. The spark of their past romance reignites between Danny and Maggie, but Danny's dark past fills him with doubt and fear.
