In 19th century Cuba, wealthy coffee merchant Luis (played by Antonio Banderas) is set to marry a mail-order bride. Luis has never seen this American woman, Julia (played by Angelina Jolie), and when he first encounters her at the dock, her beauty captivates him. However, he is unaware that this beautiful bride is full of schemes.
The newlywed life brings immense happiness to Luis, and he believes that such bliss can last forever. Yet, Luis soon discovers that his wife is not as innocent as he imagined. Julia conceals a series of lies, all aimed at securing Luis's vast wealth.
What appears to be a happy life conceals many hidden currents and uncertainties.
