The story tells that 12-year-old Rob Horton moved to a small town in northern Florida with his father Robert after his mother Caroline passed away due to illness. They live in a motel called "Kentucky Star," where Robert makes a living doing odd jobs for the motel owner Beauchamp. New to the area, Rob faces bullying at school. One day, while crossing a damp forest to catch the school bus, Rob accidentally discovers a large tiger locked in a cage. He tells this to his new friend Sistine, and under her persuasion, they decide to help the tiger regain its freedom. Following their plan, they eventually rescue the tiger, but a series of unexpected events follow.
