The story takes place in Oklahoma in 1906, where Henry (played by Tim Blake Nelson) has settled with his son Wyatt (Gavin Lewis) to run a farm. Ten years earlier, Henry's wife passed away, and over the years, he has hoped to teach Wyatt how to be self-sufficient. Henry's brother-in-law Al (Trace Adkins) is the only help for the family. One day, Henry encounters an injured man named Cory (Scott Haze) by the roadside, who is accompanied by a gun and a bag of money. Henry takes Cory home and hides the weapon and money, but soon realizes he has gotten himself into trouble when a group of men claiming to be police arrive at his home to take Cory away; they are investigating a bank robbery.
